Salmon in the Schools
We are seeking sponsorships that wish to support our Salmon in the Schools program.
Each January, schools around the Skagit Watershed receive 200 coho eggs to raise in a 55-gallon tank, giving students a front-row seat as the fish develop from eggs into fry. Come spring, once the salmon have grown, students take a field trip to release them into local streams, sending them off on their journey to the sea and back. While there, students learn about water quality, explore what makes a healthy riparian area, and pitch in on a service project like removing invasive weeds or planting trees.
Why does this program matter?
For more than a decade, we’ve reached thousands of students across the watershed, leaving a lasting impression while nurturing environmental stewardship and salmon knowledge. This is possible by providing students with:
- Hands-on science: Salmon tanks fulfill a required Washington State science standard, making this a meaningful and practical tool for teachers across grade levels.
- Place-based learning: Classroom lessons, stream field trips, and art projects work together to connect students to the watershed right outside their door.
- A memory that lasts: Release day is something students carry with them. Teachers have expressed that this inspires students to take care of the Skagit River Watershed.
