Lamprey scouting season is officially on here at t Lamprey scouting season is officially on here at the SFEG!

Why? Before construction begins this summer for a few of our projects, we’re required to complete fish exclusion, aka removing all fish and aquatic species from the area before we break ground. So on Earth Day, we headed out with Monica, a Fish Biologist from WDFW, to get an idea of how many fish we will need to remove.

We visited 4 construction sites to check for Pacific lamprey before the season kicks off. Here’s the thing about lamprey: they bury themselves in the mud and are incredibly easy to miss. That’s why Monica comes out each year with a specialized electrofishing backpack set to a low-frequency pulse that gently “tickles” them out of the sediment. 🪱⚡

By knowing where lamprey are hiding before fish exclusion day, we can make sure as few critters as possible are disturbed during construction. It’s the kind of planning that makes a big difference for the fish — and for the health of the whole watershed.
