Salmon in the Schools
One of our flagship programs, Salmon in the Schools, gives K–12 students across Skagit County a front-row seat to one of nature’s most remarkable stories.
Each January, participating schools receive 200 coho salmon eggs. Students watch them hatch into alevin, grow into fry, and — in a moment students never forget — release them into a healthy Skagit watershed stream. Along the way, students explore the salmon life cycle, local habitat, human impacts, and what it means to be a watershed steward.
The program blends classroom lessons, stream field trips, and hands-on art projects to meet students where they are and ensure the learning sticks. Salmon tanks also fulfill a required Washington State science standard, making this a powerful tool for teachers and students alike.
We currently serve over 1,000 students across 13 schools in Concrete, Sedro-Woolley, Burlington-Edison, Mount Vernon, La Conner, Anacortes, and Conway school district
