Restoration Construction Internship (Paid)

Do you want to gain hands-on experience in salmon habitat restoration and construction in the Skagit watershed? Join our fish passage construction team for a summer of fun, fish, and learning new skills in a sporty high vis vest and a hard hat! This intern will assist the Habitat Restoration Program with tasks associated with fish passage project planning and construction monitoring. Every summer, Skagit Fisheries constructs multiple fish passage projects with the goal of restoring habitat connectivity for salmon and other anadromous fish species. In summer 2026, Skagit Fisheries expects to be constructing 5 habitat restoration projects at 4 different sites within the Skagit watershed. The intern will be involved in pre-construction tasks, construction monitoring, fish exclusion during construction, project planning, and more.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a current college or university student (at start of internship) with a background and interest in one or more of the following areas of study: environmental sciences/studies, biology, restoration/conservation, ecology
  • Must be able to able to use a personal vehicle to get to project sites
  • Ability to be flexible with schedule is desired as construction dates may change depending on contractor schedules
  • Knowledgeable on native and non-native fish and amphibian identification
  • Proficient reading comprehension and ability to learn protocol required for environmental permits and compliance
  • Inquisitive and enthusiastic to learn
  • GIS knowledge and competence desirable, but not required

Time Commitment

The Internship begins mid-May and is anticipated to end mid-September (18 weeks). There is flexibility on the exact start and end date, but the intern needs to be available during both Spring and Summer terms. The time commitment is 10-20 hours per week ( 10 hour days) mid-May to July 13.  Then July 13- mid through September, the time commitment will increase to 30 hours per week, or three 10-hour days.  This additional 10-hour day per week is added during the active construction season. Total internship = 300 hours

Stipend

This is a volunteer position eligible for a $4,500 stipend, with monthly disbursements

Paid Education Internship for River Journey (Recorrido por el Rio) Program

Are you a bilingual student that enjoys working with kids and being outside? Join our team and be part of a new education program at Skagit Fisheries, the River Journey (Recorrido Por el Rio). This program will take a group of multilingual students on a journey through the Skagit watershed, from the high mountains to the sea. Through this internship you will help teach these students, in Spanish and English, about the native fish and plants & ecology. You will participate in a series of field trips, including rafting the Skagit River, an overnight adventure with the North Cascades Institute, and stream exploration close to home at Little Mountain Park. 

Qualifications:

Must be a current college student with a background and interest in education, environmental science/studies, and/or biology. Applicant must be fluent in Spanish and English, and comfortable teaching students in Spanish and English. This position requires work outside in all types of weather and uneven terrain. 

Time Commitment

This is a paid internship that requires a time commitment of 1-2 days a week between 7-8 hours a day, Monday-Friday. There are two overnight field trips, and each intern will be required to attend at least one of these. There may occasional events on weekends (optional). Interns will participate in field trips Sept-June and also spend time at the Skagit Fisheries office in Mount Vernon preparing for field trips. The intern will also participate in other education program events. The ideal candidante can commit to Sept 15, 2025-June 15, 2026, 300 hours.  Accomodations can be made for a shorter term if necessary.

Now Hiring: Seasonal Riparian Restoration Technician for Summer 2025

Looking for a summer opportunity to help Skagit salmon?  We’re hiring seasonal restoration technicians!

Seasonal Restoration Technicians perform manual labor to implement riparian habitat
restoration projects throughout the Skagit and Samish River watersheds. Activities are
primarily geared towards maintenance of native vegetation along waterways as part of
ongoing restoration efforts. Specific tasks include mechanical weed control, herbicide
application under the direction of a licensed applicator, mowing, mulching, watering,
weeding, and removing trash. Work will be conducted outdoors in all weather conditions
and terrain including waterways, steep slopes, pasture, forest, and wetlands.
