DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Opportunity: Fish Rescue at Restoration Sites \nJoin us for a Fish Rescue  day — a hands-on\, hard-working day that plays a critical role in protecting our watershed. Before construction can begin on fish passage projects\, we need to safely remove all fish and amphibians from the creek. That’s where you come in! This is a great opportunity to see lots of fish\, work alongside the Skagit Fisheries team\, and better understand the nuts and bolts of a fish passage project.  \n \nWhy we need your help\nThis is a big undertaking that requires long days and lots of hands. Your support helps us get this important work done safely and efficiently. \nWhy don’t we have set dates yet?\nThese projects need to stay flexible. All construction projects come with inevitable delays – equipment\, permitting\, or weather conditions can all affect whether an exclusion can happen on a given day. We don’t have confirmed dates yet\, but we do have a general timeline\, with most dates happening weekdays in the month of August. We promise to keep our communication open and honest about what we know (and don’t know) along the way. \nWhat we do know is that we will need support throughout the month of August\, between Monday and Thursdays. Even if you are not sure on your schedule yet\, we encourage you to fill out the interest form and we will be in touch about dates.  \nWhat to expect\n\nA full day\, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM\nAll necessary gear provided (hard hats\, waders\, etc.)\nPlease bring your own snacks\, food\, and water — due to budget constraints\, we’re unable to provide meals\nYou will get wet and muddy — come prepared!\nPlease note\, due to the nature of the project volunteers must be 16 years old of age\nFor your safety we ask that volunteers are able to confidently lift 25 pounds\n\nWhat you’ll be doing\n\nHands-on fish rescue — While the ability to do fish identification is a helpful\, it is not required! \nLearning about the construction side of fish passage work from a real-time\, hands-on perspective\nWorking alongside SFEG staff throughout the day\nLearning how to move safely on a construction site and how to properly handle fish

SUMMARY:2026 Spawner Survey Workshop
DESCRIPTION:2026 Spawner Survey Workshop\nAre you interested in becoming a Spawner Survey Volunteer this fall & winter?  \nAs a kickoff for our 2026-2027 Spawner Survey Program\, we are hosting a Spawner Survey Workshop to learn the protocol for identifying and documenting spawning salmon at SFEG restoration sites. This Program helps SFEG measure project success and track salmon recovery. Whether you are a returning volunteer or a seasoned pro\, we would love to have your support! Please note the time commitment below. This Program requires hearty\, dedicated volunteers\, but the payoff is huge — time spent really getting to know a stream reach and the fish that live there. Our volunteers return year after year to “fall in love” with their streams!  \nPlease read through all the information below before filling out the intake form! \n \nTraining Requirements\n\n\n\nNew Volunteers: Required to attend BOTH the virtual classroom session on October 1 from 6 PM – 8 PM and the workshop on October 3 from 9 AM – 12 PM. \nReturning Volunteers: Required to attend the workshop portion on October 3 from 9 AM – 12 PM. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Spawner Survey Program\nJoin our team of community scientists and help track the health of local salmon populations! Volunteers are trained by SFEG staff at an October workshop to identify and count returning adult salmon\, document carcasses\, and locate and mark redds (spawning nests) in local streams.\n\nSurveys are conducted weekly from October through January. This volunteer role requires a commitment of one day per week for three months\, with a typical time investment of 1–6 hours per week. You will be assigned to a specific stream reach\, along with 1-2 other volunteers\, and as a team\, you will coordinate to find the best day/time each week to complete your surveys.  \nWhat we ask our volunteers to do \n\n\n\nCommit to walking their assigned stream reaches every week with their team of other SFEG volunteers from October to January.\nSubmit spawner survey data and photos in a timely manner to SFEG staff.\n\n\n\nCan’t commit to doing this every week from October to January? No worries\, we would love to add you to our ‘subs’ list for the weeks that the regular volunteers may not be able to walk their streams. Please indicate this on your intake form when the question asks.  \nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat gear is provided?  \n\n\n\nThermometers\, snips\, gloves\, notebooks\, pencil/pens\, flagging\, mini first aid kit\, and a walking pole\nWaders and life vests are available from SFEG on a first come first serve basis\n\nPlease note: waders of some kind are necessary for every creek\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat gear do I need?  \n\n\n\nVolunteers need waders\, rain gear\, and warm clothing\n\n\n\nHow many people will I be working with? \n\n\n\nYou will be paired up with at least one other volunteer! Some of the more challenging reaches have 3 people assigned to them. \n\n\n\nHow do I get paired with a team and stream? \n\n\n\nOnce you complete the intake form linked above\, our program coordinator will send you a follow-up form to gather more details—things like your availability\, any accessibility needs\, and how far you’re willing to travel. Based on your responses\, the coordinator will match you with a team and stream.\n\n\n\nI can’t commit to doing it every week for the whole winter. Please indicate this on your intake form when the question asks. \n\n\n\nWhy is the Spawner Survey Program important to SFEG?  \n\n\n\nMany of our stream reaches have been surveyed for years (some 20+!) and give us valuable information about the status of salmon in these streams. New reaches are added each year in places where we are actively completing restoration projects\, and this gives us up-to-date information about salmon species and distribution. Having “eyes on the ground” weekly during spawning season also allows us to better understand stream dynamics and condition. \n\n\n\nWe hope you will join us!
