SUMMARY:Salmon Sighting at Pressentin Park - Join Us!
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, November 20th at Pressentin Park. As this park will be closed through next June\, this and future events this fall are the only opportunities for the public to get a sneak peek at the new features of the park\, including the newly restored side channel. Please carpool if possible as parking is limited! \nAttention:\nDue to the recent flooding in the past few days\, there is a possibility that this Saturday’s salmon sighting will be cancelled. SUMMARY:Orca Observation and Photography Showcase: Spring Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the final lecture of our spring speaker series! \nWe are so thrilled to invite wildlife photographer Bart Rulon to share his insights about orcas with us. \nThursday\, June 10th\, 6-7:30 RSVP \nOrca Observation and Photography Showcase \n \nJoin wildlife photographer Bart Rulon to learn more about the spectacular orcas we see here in the Salish Sea through the lens of his camera.  Bart will show us amazing photos\, and talk about some of the challenges involved in photographing killer whales and some of the techniques he’s learned along the way.  He will also talk about the orcas’ connection to salmon\, the differences between the southern resident and transient whales we see here\, and how things have changed in the 21 years since he started focusing on whales.  Bart will share stories of some of his favorite experiences illustrated through his award winning photography.  \n  \n Bart Rulon \nBart Rulon’s love of wildlife started at a very young age\, and after graduating from the University of Kentucky in a self-made biological illustration major he moved to Washington State to start a career making images of wildlife and never looked back.  During that time Rulon’s travels have taken him on long photography trips to Africa\, India\, South America\, Alaska\, and Costa Rica\, and he has traveled all over the contiguous United States and Canada.  After a life changing kayak trip in the San Juan Islands where he came across J-pod killer whales\, Bart realized that he should also be spending more time with the amazing animals that were right in his backyard!  As a result he has spent thousands of days on the water over the last 21 years photographing and studying the whales of the Pacific Northwest.  He’s inspired to share these wildlife adventures with the rest of the world through his photography\, and art. Bart has always enjoyed going the extra mile to photograph something unique and he often uses a sea kayak\, camouflaged floating blind\, or a custom made photography boat in order to get closer to his subjects for a more intimate view. Bart’s award winning art and photographs have been shown in over 60 museums in North America and abroad. He teaches at the University of Washington and was awarded their “Teaching Excellence Award” in 2009.  After overwhelming demand from fellow photographers\, Bart started leading wildlife photography tours to some of his favorite spots both local and exotic!  You can see his photography\, art\, and books at www.BartRulon.com \nThursday\, June 10th 6-7:30 RSVP\nThank you to the Skagit River Salmon Festival for donating funds\, making this event possible.  \nThis is event is FREE to attend\, however\, it does take funding to put on high quality virtual events such as these and donations are appreciated.  \n If you like having events like this delivered to the comfort of your own home\, please consider a donation.

SUMMARY:SFEG Spring Speaker Series: A Natural History of the Skagit Valley
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for Skagit Fisheries’ virtual spring speaker series! \nWe are thrilled to welcome Dr. Jon Riedel\, who will present on the history and geological changes of the Skagit Valley\, for our first talk.  \nA Natural History of the Skagit Valley \nGeologic Evolution of the Skagit Valley is based on more than 30 years of research by geologist Dr. Jon Riedel. This talk traces major changes in the watershed and river caused by glaciation\, landslides\, volcanic eruptions\, and colossal ice age floods. Dr. Riedel will also briefly discuss how knowledge of the Skagit’s development has helped us understand the peculiar genetic diversity of some species in the watershed. \n\nDr. Jon Riedel \nJon Riedel is a geologist with the U.S. National Park Service at North Cascades National Park. He holds a M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin- Madison and a Ph.D. from Simon Fraser University\, and is a licensed geologist in Washington. The focus of his research during the past 30 years is the response of Washington’s glaciers to climate change\, from the last ice age 30\,000 years ago to the modern warming climate. Dr. Riedel established glacier monitoring programs at Olympic (2013)\, Mount Rainier (2003) and North Cascades (1993) national parks to track changes in more than 500 glaciers. Recent publications have quantified changes in volume and runoff from glaciers in several regional watersheds and detailed the retreat of the last Cordilleran ice sheet from the North Cascades. Jon is also a founding member and president of the Skagit Climate Science Consortium\, a nonprofit organization focused on studying the impacts of climate change in Puget Sound’s largest watershed and making this information available to local decision makers. \nThis is event is FREE\, however\, donations are appreciated.  \nThursday\, April 29th 6-7:30 PM RSVP\n

SUMMARY:Earth Day Photo Contest Winners
DESCRIPTION:In lieu of a physical Earth Day\, Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group hosted a photography and art Earth Day contest!\n  \nThere were four different categories where people submitted their work\, three of them were photography and one was any other type of visual art. We chose two winners for each category; one 17 and under winner and one 18 and over winner.   \n  \nCategory 1: Best Bird or Beast \nGo out and find inspiration among wildlife. Whether it be an eagle\, a bear\, a salmon\, or a spider\, this is your chance to show us what birds and beasts you can find. For this category\, you must have at least one animal in your photograph. Once you’ve got your wildlife in sight\, snap away! \n  \nWinners\nMegan Jewell\, 17 and under \n \nTimmy Moser\, 18 and over \n \n  \nCategory 2: Water is Life\nThe life of the Skagit comes from its water\, and we want you to go out and capture that. You must have some kind of connection to water in your photograph. It can be a river\, creek\, bay\, or anything else you can find! If your connection to water seems abstract make sure to explain it to us when you submit your photograph. \n  \nWinners\nJordan Janicki\, 17 and under  \n \nTessa Perler\, 18 and over \n \n  \nCategory 3: Everyday is Earth Day\nRegardless of the day\, everyday should be Earth Day. Your task is to show everybody why! Show how we can help the Earth even when nobody else is looking. This could mean showcasing a relationship between person and wildlife\, conservation efforts within the Skagit\, and everything in between! \n  \nWinner\nMaddie Hicks\, 18 and over \n \n  \nCategory 4: Scenic Skagit *This category is for non-photography based visual arts*\nThis is our category for forms of visual art that are not photography. From paintings\, to drawings\, to sculptures\, this is your time to show off all of your artistic skills! This category is also the most open to a wide array of submissions. Like the other categories\, this must be based on things that you have seen or experienced within the Skagit Watershed. We want to know what Skagit means to you. Show us the beauty you see here\, the reasons why you love it\, and the things that scream Skagit to you. As long as your art portrays an aspect of life or nature here\, we would love to see it! \n  \nWinners\nSamantha Jepperson\, 17 and under \n \nAnders Rodin\, 18 and over  \n \n  \n  \n  \nWe had so many amazing submissions that we decided to include an honorable mention section as well. We hope these incredible photos bring some beauty to your day!\n  \nHonorable Mentions\nAnders Rodin \nSamantha Jepperson \nAmy Fenlon \nAnders Rodin \nTimmy Moser \nAnders Rodin \nDavid Wright \n
