Macroinvertebrate Monitoring

Macroinvertebrate samples (aquatic insects) are collected from selected restoration sites to assess stream health. Volunteers are trained to assist SFEG staff to collect samples.  Several samples are taken from different riffles in the monitored creeks.   Samples are then sent to a lab for professional identification of the macroinvertebrates.  At least 500 organisms are identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible (usually genus or species).

Collecting Bugs

Volunteers work with staff from  SFEG to collect samples of aquatic insects at restoration sites. These insects are food for juvenile salmon and are good indicators of water quality.
