Anacortes Senior College Course
Saving Our Salmon! (3 weeks: Oct 13, 20, 27) Restoring salmon habitat is the theme of this brief course. The first session will introduce the salmon habitat restoration efforts of the Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group. Next will be a focus on juvenile salmonid use of various area nearshore environments, and the third session will be a field trip to Deception Pass State Park to tour a restoration site. Class meets Thursday afternoons at 3:30 pm for 3 weeks only.
Eric Beamer is Research Director for the Skagit River System Cooperative, where he has studied the ecology of salmon freshwater, estuarine, and nearshore habitats since 1984. He is a principal investigator of landscape processes influencing habitat conditions.
Lisa Kaufman is the Nearshore Program Manager for the Northwest Straits Foundation, where she manages restoration projects. She coordinates a shoreline landowner education program to reduce the impacts of shoreline armoring, and has worked for the WA Dept. of Natural Resources where she developed an estuary restoration program.
