Fish and Wildlife Commissioners Appointed By Alison Studley In March, Governor Christine Gregoire appointed four new members to Washington State's Fish and Wildlife Commission. The commission is an important and powerful body entrusted with establishing policy and direction for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The four new members bring rich and varied backgrounds to the nine-member commission. Among the new commissioners is a local woman who has been working on salmon issues in the Skagit for the past 8 years, Shirley Solomon. Shirley is well versed in fish and wildlife habitat issues, as well as those of the regional fisheries enhancement groups. She comes from a long line of avid hunters and fishers and has a strong commitment to conservation and sustainable management practices. Shirley lives on Fir Island and is an experienced manager of environmental and land use projects, currently employed as a project director with Long Live the Kings. As chair of the Skagit Watershed Council, she coordinates a group of 40 organizations, agencies and associations with diverse interests in Skagit salmon. It is exciting to have someone knowledgeable about Skagit salmon issues appointed to this state commission. Other new appointees include: Jerry Gutzwiler of Wenatchee, Miranda Wecker of Naselle, and Charles Perry of Moses Lake.
